An expert panel that advises the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has voted unanimously to recommend a new drug for bipolar I disorder and schizophrenia. The drug, Saphris, was found to safe and effective for the acute treatment of manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder, as well as for the acute treatment of schizophrenia in adults. If eventually approved by the FDA, Saphris would be the first drug approved for both indications.
