Researchers have discovered a pathway linked to bone healing, and they say the mood stabilizer lithium may affect how this pathway works. In a study of mice with fractures, scientists found a gene that, when blocked, kept the mice's bones from healing. But when the gene was activated with lithium, the mice's bones healed at an accelerated rate.
