Researchers at the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health say nearly 40 percent of Americans who have major depression also have mild, brief episodes of manic behavior. The scientists say this type of mania--called "subthreshold hypomania"--is a mild form of mania that lasts fewer than four days. This places it below the threshold for bipolar disorder.
