Statistics For Bipolar Disorder

The number of American children and teens treated for bipolar
disorder increased 40-fold between 1994 and 2003, experts say, and
this statistic is fueling the fire of the controversy over bipolar
disorder diagnoses in kids. Some psychiatrists say the increase is
the result of greater awareness of how the disorder affects kids.
But others say bipolar disorder has become a 'catch-all' diagnosis
for explosive, aggressive children who are then given powerful--and
potentially harmful--meds.
