Experts: Newer antidepressants equally effective

Experts from the American College of Physicians (ACP) say that all "second generation" antidepressants are equally effective. The experts' opinion, which appear in a new clinical practice guideline for the ACP, is based on a review of more than 200 published studies about the benefits and side effects of these newer drugs. The review found that second generation antidepressants--a group that includes such commonly used drugs as Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, Lexapro, Cymbalta, and Wellbutrin--are all equally effective at treating depression but do have different adverse effects. The guideline also recommends that doctors make antidepressant treatment decisions based on side effects, cost, and patient preferences, and that they monitor patients closely for adverse effects.  Read full story >
