Study: Bipolar disorder raises death risk from other illnesses

University of Washington researchers have found that people who suffer from bipolar disorders have a higher risk of death from a medical illness than people without the disorders. According to a university press release, scientists reviewed 17 studies involving more than 331,000 patients and found that people with bipolar disorder have a 35 percent to 200 percent higher risk of dying from a natural cause than people without a mental disorder. The most common conditions leading to premature death among these patients were heart disease, respiratory diseases, stroke, and endocrine problems such as diabetes.  Read full story >
