SSRI antidepressants may lower adult suicide risk

A review of eight large-scale observational studies has found that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Paxil may significantly reduce the risk of attempted or completed suicide in depressed adults. Previous research, including a 2007 U.S. Food and Drug Administration study, concluded that the SSRI-related risk of suicide was neutral in adults, elevated in patients under 25, and reduced in people older than 65. But in a new study, researchers found that these antidepressants did, in fact, reduce suicide risk in adults. Researchers say children and adolescents taking the drugs should be closely monitored due to the possibility of suicidal thoughts and attempts.  Read full story >
