Research supports parasite's link to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder

British scientists are reporting that they have found how the toxoplasmosis parasite may trigger the development of schizophrenia and other bipolar disorders. Researchers at the University of Leeds say the parasite affects the production of dopamine, the chemical that relays messages in the brain controlling aspects of movement, thinking, and behavior. Toxoplasmosis is a common parasite that about 22 percent of Americans carry around in the form of cysts. It is transmitted via cat feces, on unwashed vegetables, and in raw or undercooked infected meat.  Read full story >
