Mentally ill often placed in nursing homes

Nursing homes are increasingly housing young and middle-aged mentally ill patients, an article from the Associated Press reports. The article, which details an analysis of reports from all fifty states, finds that there has been a 41 percent increase in the number of patient with schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder who are being housed with older, frailer patients--a fact that experts say has led to violence and in some cases death. Experts say this increase points to a failing on the part of states and the federal government to fund appropriate housing facilities specifically for the mentally ill.
