Provigil may help antipsychotic weight gain: study

Weight gain is a common side effect of such mood-stabilizing drugs as Zyprexa, Risperdal, and Zyprexa. But a new study has found that adding the sleep-disorder drug Provigil (modafinil) may help reduce this weight gain in patients taking these medications. For the study, researchers evaluated the effect of Provigil on antipsychotic-related weight gain in normal volunteer subjects. All of the subjects received Zyprexa, and half also received Provigil treatment while the other half were given a placebo. After three weeks, although the body mass index increased in both groups, those receiving Zyprexa plus the placebo showed significantly greater weight gain than those given the Zyprexa/Provigil combo.
