What makes people 'snap' and kill?

We've all heard the baffling stories: a U.S. soldier opens fire at a counseling center, killing five comrades; a professor kills his wife and two other adults, then himself. But what makes people suddenly "snap" and turn to this type of violence? Psychiatrists do know that though the outburst of violence may seem sudden, there has often been a psychological buildup before the person acts out. Experts also say there are factors that make it more likely someone will become violent, including brain tumors, seizures, alcohol and drug abuse, and psychosis stemming from schizophrenia and delusional disorder.
