Depression, bipolar diagnoses drop after FDA warning

According to a new study, there has been a consistent drop in the number of Americans--particularly children--diagnoses with depression since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued its first warning about the risks of antidepressant medications. In 2003, the FDA first warned about the risk of suicidal behavior and thoughts in young people taking antidepressants. Researchers found that this may have helped reverse a five-year trend of rising rates of depression diagnoses. Investigators say their findings cannot explain the decline in diagnoses for depression, nor can it explain why diagnoses for anxiety and bipolar disorder also dropped since the first warnings in 2003.  Read full story >
