Experts: Adult antipsychotics also work in children

Experts at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) say antipsychotic medications used to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia in adults are effective at treating the conditions in children and teens. The FDA is currently considering three applications for the use of the antipsychotics Geodon, Seroquel, and Zyprexa for these two conditions in patients under 18, and the agency's expert panels are set to meet to make recommendations on the drugs this week. Current research shows the drugs are effective but that they carry significant risks, including sedation and weight gain. All three drugs are currently used to treat these conditions in children and adolescents, though they are not approved for this use.
