Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder may have common genetic roots
(Telegraph.co.uk) UPDATED 2009-07-01
Researchers in three studies have found a common genetic cause behind schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, two mental health conditions that were previously thought to be unrelated. Scientists pooled information on approximately 15,000 schizophrenia patients and 80,000 people who did not have the disorder. They found that thousands of tiny genetic mutations called single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are responsible for about one third of the risk of developing schizophrenia. Investigators then discovered that the same genetic variations in SNPs were linked with bipolar disorder. The research team said that although this doesn't bring them closer to finding a cure for either schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, it does allow them to narrow the hunt for information on how to treat and prevent both conditions.
