Study: Family history predicts mental health risks

New Zealand researchers say looking at a person's family history reveals not only his or her risk for psychiatric disorders, but also the likely course of these conditions. In their long-term study, scientists followed the progress of 981 participants from age 3 to age 32. They also gathered data about the participants' biological relatives. The researchers found associations among four disorders--anxiety, depression, drug abuse, and alcoholism--with family history linked to the development and course of all four conditions. Investigators say their findings may be valuable researchers studying genetic forms of a psychiatric disorder and for doctors treating patients with these illnesses.  Read full story >
