Study: Self-affirmations can backfire

According to new research, repeating phrases such as "I am a lovable person" or other self-affirmations can backfire for people who need self-esteem boosts the most. Canadian scientists found that study participants who had the lowest self-esteem and repeated the positive statements actually felt worse after doing so. But the participants who already felt good about themselves were helped by the mantras. The study's lead researcher said that despite these results, there is really no handy alternative to boosting self-esteem besides positive affirmations.  Read full story >
