45,000 deaths per year linked to lack of insurance

A new study has found that 45,000 Americans die every year from lack of care caused by having no insurance. Researchers say that number--which equals one person every 12 minutes--equals more deaths annually than deaths caused from murder and drunk driving combined. The Harvard study found that people aged 65 and under who lacked insurance had a 40 percent higher risk of death than people who had coverage. The study's authors say this number has dramatically increased when compared to a similar study conducted in 1993, possibly because the number of uninsured has grown, and options for where non-insured people can be treated have dwindled.
