Epilepsy meds may be linked to schizophrenia

Treatment in childhood with epilepsy medications may be linked to the development of schizophrenia later in life, some researchers say. Scientists have known that seizures in youth are linked to schizophrenia, but they aren't sure if it is the epilepsy itself or the treatments--such as Phenobarbital--that could lead to the thought disorder. Researchers say they are currently studying the link, particularly because Phenobarbital is widely used for the treatment of other disorders as well, including migraines, neuropathic pain, and mood disorders.  Read full story >
