Smoking tied to suicide risk in bipolar disorder

People with bipolar disorder who smoke are more prone to suicidal behavior, researchers say. The theory behind the link is that smoking is an act usually taken up on impulse, and highly impulsive behavior is a symptom of bipolar disorder and of suicidal behavior. In the study of 116 bipolar patients, scientists found that those who smoked scored higher on a standard test of suicidal thought and actions. They were also more likely to attempt suicide when compared to bipolar patients who didn't smoke.  Read full story >
