Psychotic patients most at-risk of heart disease

Patients with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders are more likely to die of heart disease than mentally-healthy people, a new study suggests. Researchers say lifestyle factors and medications probably contribute to the increased risk, but they believe the isolating factors of the disease itself could also be a factor. In a study of veterans, scientists found that those who had psychosis were twice as likely to die of heart-related problems as other participants. And even when they took smoking and lack of physical activity into account, schizophrenia patients were still 17 percent more likely to die, while those with other psychotic disorders were at 30 percent greater risk.
