Experts Revise Book on Mental Illness

Psychiatrists with the American Psychiatric Association have unveiled their changes for the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The draft document calls for binge eating and gambling to be listed as official disorders, but it does not suggest that Internet addiction, sex addiction, or obesity be listed. It also calls for changes in the classification of autism spectrum disorders, personality disorders, and substance abuse and addiction disorders. Changes to the DSM often trigger controversy, since the manual is not only used by mental health professionals, but also by insurance companies who use the diagnoses contained in it to provide or deny coverage for mental illnesses.  Read full story >
