Failed Suicide Method May Predict Likelihood of Successful Attempt

Swedish researchers say the method a person uses to attempt suicide may help predict his or her chances of completing a suicide in the future. In the study of nearly 49,000 people admitted to the hospital following a suicide attempt over a nine year period, investigators found that people whose first attempt involved hanging, strangulation, or suffocation were more likely to die from suicide. The study also found that attempts at gassing, jumping from a height, using a firearm, or drowning were moderately associated with later suicide, while poisoning or cutting were linked to a lower suicide risk.
