Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

I am horrified.

By msdee Thursday, May 13, 2010

I am 31 years old and I found a lump in my armpit (1 single lump), close to the chest wall however appears to be where a crease is, it is hard to explain.

One year ago I was having discomfort in that same arm and armpit went to a breast surgeon she said it was mastaglia.  So last week I went back to dr when I found this lump doing a routine exam. She said it was inflamed and put me on antibioitics.. I go back in one week. Antibioitics are done. I am worried that it is not going down but I am so freaked out about it I can't tell. It feels weird, I think last week it was more hard, but today it feels alittle mushy.

The first thought is breast cancer when you find a lump, what scares me the most is, from having pains 1 yr ago and now this. Having had a cervical cancer scare in 2007 and all the googling which I am doing and should not be.. When it appears there and if it is cancer it is too late. I am supposed to be planning a vacation with my husband but all i am doing is worrying about this lump. I asked the dr what if it don't go away she said we willl talk about it then. I don't know what to make of it. No other lumps, no other nodes that are swollen. Any thoughts? Any advice would be great.

Try not to get a head of yourself on worrying about this.  If this lump does turn out to be cancer, it is not too late to get treatment and to be just fine.  Breast cancer is typically a slow-growing disease.   Right now you need to continue to be assertive about getting this lump diagnosed.  If the antibiotic doesn't work, then ask about the risks and benefits of having a biopsy and/or imaging tests.  It would also be appropriate to ask for a referral to a breast specialist if the antibiotic doesn't eliminate the lump.  Most lumps are not breast cancer, but it is perfectly reasonable for you to want to know for sure.

I had a lump in that my doctor said was a fibroid...he said no need to worry. He was wrong. Six months later there was a second lump on my chest. I decided to have a mammogram earlier than I was scheduled (my insurance would not pay for it until they found it was cancer). One of the tumors did not show on the x-ray, but I could feel it. I pushed to have a sonogram which showed two primary tumors in one breast and another in my other breast. I became my own advocate and you need to be your own, too. Get tested. If it isn't cancer...great! If it is...you've caught it early. Be sure your lifestyle is healthy so your body can fight. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables...limit dairy and meats...no sugar...no junk food...learn to relax and don't forget to exercise. By the way...I am ten years out from my diagnosis and my oncologist thinks I have it beat! Stay positive, and keep your immune system healthy and strong!

Thank You, went back today, she said she didn't feel the lump anymore. skin is still destended where it was. Thank you so much for your input. Of course I am alittle worried. After I posted on here I felt better last week. I read a lot and helped me think more postive.

Godo for you. You'll have your ups and downs, but gradually this fear should fade. Be well - PJH

Hi Ladies, I hope this post finds you all doing well. I had to go back to the breast surgeon today. Last month I noticed something i haven't in 4 years (since 1 month prior to me getting pregnant w/my son. My boobs started to hurt b4 my period. Well last week the same side where this lump in the armpit was the pain is really bad, Hurts like hell to take a bra off. Strange thing 2nd month of this, but haven't had it in over 4 years so not sure if it was related.. Dr found a lump at about 4 o''clock in the left breast. HUrts like a you know what. So Friday I am going for a mammo (my 1st one in 4 years) and a ultrasound. She did say that it can be a combo of things, hormones, me not wanting to be mobile (my dad died in feb) so I haven't been looking to run a marathon, but I haven't gained any weight, (i have lost) but I am doing just everyday stuff, not exercising enough..
So NOw I sit and wait again, yet again horrified. But maybe not as bad as the lump in the pit.. This one is painful, slightly moveable, just appeared out of no where, it wasn't there 1 month ago when she examed me twice in a month. Go figure.. Ok so I ask again ladies, any thoughts?

Hey, Ms. Dee- Painful, slightly moveable, appeared out of nowhere... sure sounds like a cyst or fibrocystic breasts to me, not cancer. Best of luck with the mammogram (wondering why you haven't had one in 4 years, as a survivor??) - hope things go well for you - PJH

Hey PJ,

Haven't had one in that long, because I am only 31 years old, (they say I don't need to go), and no  breast cancer in my family anywhere. Insurance won't cover it either.. Now I will be going every year, dr already said that she is not taking any chances. I hope there hasn't been significant changes since my last one I will be very upset. The thought that they were trying to stop women my age going for them is beyond me.. Anyone can develop it at any age.

Ah, didn't realize you were quite that young... You're right, though cancer is very unusual at your age, it's certainly a possibility - and one that needs to be taken seriously. I'm glad you'll be getting regular mammograms from now on. You might ask about the possibility of alternating them with MRIs, which is something they're finding useful for younger women at high risk, such as yourself. Be well- PJH
