I had my routine mammogram in Feb. 2008, found a "spot" that needed to be checked with compression mamo and ultrasound.
My Dr call back and said that I needed to see a surgeon, who she sent me to. He ordered a steriotactic biopsy and 10 days after that I got the news that I had breast cancer in my left breast.
The surgeon wanted me to go through a lumpectomy and told me that I would have to go through chemo and radiation. I was told this on a Wednesday by phone so I had all weekend to decide what to do.
I talked to friends at church that had been through this. I got online and investigated my options.
I have cousins that have had various types of cancer and a dad that had stomach cancer. This is the 4th scare I have had with this left breast.
My decision was easy to make. I wanted a double mastectomy done by Dr White, with reconstruction done by Dr Yoak. They have a wonderful "track record" and comes highly recommended. The first surgeon was surprised when I told me what I wanted to do but he agreed to refer me to Dr White the surgeon that would perform the mastectomy's and works hand in hand with Dr Yoak to do it all at the same time.
I had this done in May 15, 2008, Dr Yoak put the 650cc tissue expanders in and were filled with 150cc's , over the next 6 weeks 100cc's were added weekly until they were filled.
I had to wear them until Sept 15th, 2008 when the tissue expanders were removed and the implants were put in. Now I go see Dr Yoak on Friday before my next scheduled surgery on November 20th 2008 to get the nippling done. After that all heals, I am getting the areola tattooed in. This is been the longest year of my life. But thank GOD I am now cancer free !!!

Hello Gail,
Welcome to our community -- we're glad to have you join us. Thank you for sharing your story. It surely has been a long and involved year for you, but you talk about it quite calmly and with a positive sense in your "voice" -- that's great. Best of luck on November 20th. Be sure to let us know how it goes.
Best,
Maria
Thank You so much.
I saw Dr Yoak today and he drew a picture of the nipple on my breast to show me and my husband what it would look like and about where it will be located. He is making a tiny flap with "wings" on each side that wrap around the flap and closed with sutures and the blood supply stays intact. Then in Dec 19th he will do the tattoing. He made me feel a lot more at ease after he talked to me today.
