Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

The Real Fight Begins

By chris Thursday, October 14, 2010

I have spent the whole of this year in treatment for stage 3 estrogen positve breast cancer.  I had 6 months of chemo (2 different kinds), a radical mastectomy with 20 lymph nodes removed, and 30 treatments of radiation.  I questioned each one as to the necessity, severity and effectivness.  I didn't want to do any of it.  But I did all of it.  And now I start the aromatase inhibitor Arimidex.  I don't think I have seen one positive thing concerning this drug.  Every review, every critic has been negative.  I wonder if anyone out there had mild side effects or was everyone just miserable.  I saw on an unrelated website that this drug is taken by men who want to boost muscle mass.  Appearantly men don't suffer the bone issues that women do.  Or maybe it's because they start lifting weight and offset the symtoms.  This is what I am going to do.  Start mild weight lifting( I used to pull weight in years past) legnthen my daily walking distance, and take a good calcium/vitamin D supplement.  My health otherwise is pretty good, so I hope to bypass the severity of this drug.  My onc isn't very encouraging.  With her it's "do this or die".  That's what I get for ignoring mammograms for so long.  I have no intention of this recurring anywhere in my body.  So I guess this is just another treatment that I will question, resist, research, and ultimately, do.  God bless all of you out there going through this as well.  Hang in there!

Chris, I took Arimidex for 5 years, and only in the final month did I experience pain (back pain) that I'd term truly bothersome. I did have some daily aches/pains in my feet/legs, but as soon as I got up, walked around, and got moving a bit, they disappeared. I think your plan sounds like a good one - exercise, exercise, keep active. And if you want to do all you can to prevent recurrence - take the Arimidex. You won't be sorry. Take care - PJH
