I AM DONE

By MsMary Thursday, June 24, 2010

Ladies,

I have completed my last Herceptin treatment on 23 June 2010.  I want to thank you all, PJ, for being there when I started this a year ago, April 27, thinking that I would not make it, but through prayers and this webpage, I have made it and I am helping others to go through it.  God let's stuff happen to us so we can be there for others.  I am blessed, I am well, I AM HEALED.

Mary, thanks so much for connecting here. It's been a pleasure writing back and forth. And yes, it's been a long journey, but now you're at the beginning of another long journey - the rest of your life. May God hold you in the palm of His hand... PJH

WAY TO GO MS. MARY!!!!

I am so happy for you and your story! So what kinds of plans for the summer? What will you do to commemorate this? I hope you give yourself a great big present and a hug from me!

Love and Health To You and Yours,

Nothing planned yet.  Just returned from San Diego and mississippi.  I moved my family to Virginia with me and will be moving into a home this Friday.  I am just happy that I made it through and now I have a lot more energy to do things that I couldn't a year ago.  We all are very blessed.  I didn't think about rewarding myself, that sounds great.  Thanks and God bless you and yours.

Thank you very much.  I am doing good but these hot flashes are killing me and making me upset.  I feel so frustrated at times that part of me want to stop my tamoxfin and then I am having problems with my feet, neopathy.  I have to take the good with the bad.  I had my reconstruction surgery on 19 July and healing pretty good.  How have you been? Take care and keep in touch.  thanks for the love.

Did you talk to your doc about taking Effexor with your tomoxifen? it seems to help with the flashes, that's what they tell me, anyway. Hope you find some relief!

Love!!!

Howdy,

Good to hear of someone finishing Herceptin.  I'm just starting a 12 week treatment of Taxol/Herceptin and then 9 months of Herceptin.  Week 1 of the double infusion I was given Decadron and had a horrible reaction and severe depression about 3 days after the infusion.  My oncologist was on vacation, so the oncall MD took me off last weeks' infusion.  I'm still really depressed and scared to death that I'm just not going to physically/emotionally get through the next 11 weeks (which my MD says is necessary to save my life!!!).  No pressure.  I've gotten through 4 rounds of A/C chemo last spring, a bi-lateral radical mastectomy in early July and now this.  I think everything that I'm up against is just starting to hit and my fear/anxiety and depression are off the charts.  I'm on Wellbutrin now for mild depression, but it's not touching the mess that's living in my head.

Any words of advice about how to handle the Herceptin?  They have me on 15 mg of Glutamine (in water) twice a day for the neuropothy, but I can already feel a tingling in my fingers and toes after one infusion.

Thanks for listening.  Take care and celebrate the "end of your Herceptin" journey.

Elena, did we "speak" last week about you seeing someone for your depression? I think so, as I remember you mentioning the oncologist being on vacation. Please follow up on that - you need to get 'the mess in your head" straightened out in order to help smooth out the rest of your treatment. As far as Herceptin, I haven't heard of any real day-to-day physical side effects. Ladies, can anyone speak to this?

And concerning the neuropathy - I've heard vitamin B12 and magnesium seem to help. Also, in a recent clinical trial, women receiving calcium and magnesium injections prior to and during TC experienced neuropathy symptoms only half as serious as women who didn’t receive injections, so this protocol shows promise for the future. There are currently a number of ongoing clinical trials testing treatments for neuropathy; you might want to check them out. Good luck - PJH

Thanks for this PJ,

We did speak about this last week.  I'm seeing my oncologist this Wed. for our meeting about my last infusion and the problems I had.  My husband always goes with me (God bless him!) and we're both going to ask that I be given something to help with depression in addition to the Wellbutrin I already take.

I'm feeling very freaked out right now and trying to get that under control.  That will be another "topic" we discuss.

I so appreciate the great information about trials out there and the ability to come here and unload.  Thank you all for letting me vent.  It makes things easier to handle.  I've never been a whiner and being able to complain and get my fears out online sure helps the anxiety (I've got anti-anxiety pills too, they give me lots of meds!).

Bless you all!

Hello

I'm Mary and I finished my last round of Herceptin June 23, this year.  The herceptin isn't the problem, it is the other chemo treatment that you had.  The only problem that you will have with herceptin or should have is tiredness and short of breath for a few days after treatment.  The Taxol is the problem with the nerve damage.  I too have nerve damage in my toes and a little in my left hand, arm.

We all go through depression whle going through this but we have to consider the fact that we are still alive.  My pain seems to be worse now than it was while I was going through chemo.  Think positive and take the good with the bad.  Not sure of what more i can tell you.  you can email me at msmary729@hotmail.com.  i will give you my phone number once you email me.

Stay strong and keep the faith.

Thanks for being so willing to reach out and help someone else going through what you've experienced, Mary. Your good karma will come back around - PJH

Thanks Mary for your kind offer.  I'll send an email tomorrow.

It helps to know I'm not alone.  You're right, I need to count my blessings even as I go through this treatment.  15 years ago there was no Herceptin.

God bless you all!  Everyone on this forum have been so generous with their help.  I feel better just hearing that this isn't a problem only I am experiencing.  This too will pass.

Hello

How are you feeling, hope your appointment with your doctor went well and you are feeling better.  Take care of yourself and take it easy.

9/ 8/10 1:19am

Mary, Thanks for checking in.  The treatment last week (#2 of 12) was much easier on me than treatment #1.  I was given Decadron in #1 and had a "steroidal psychosis" reaction.  They've changed the Decadron to Prednisone.  Not nearly as bad.  I do have lots of pain in my surgery scar that I didn't before....who knows?!  But this last week has been 100% better and I should get through the next 10 weeks okay.  Thanks again.  Blessings to you and enjoy your new found freedom!
