How often are you receiving your herceptin, my new doctor wants me to get it weekly between my chemo treatments until my last chemo treatment on 24 sept then I will start with the herceptin alone with getting it every 3 weeks. He said that the books requires me to get it weekly until i finish up my chemo but i think that is too much on my heart, any advice.

A year of Herceptin is very standard. Usually, the doctor will watch you closely for heart issues and stop the Herceptin if any pop up. Herceptin hadn't been approved for my kind of breast cancer when I was in treatment, so I didn't have it personally, but I've been told that the side effects are usually minimal compared to chemo.
Hi Mary. Just wanted to tell you that I had herceptin every three weeks for 12 months. When they were considering how often to have it, they did talk about weekly but decided three weekly was fine. When deciding this though, the dosage does get ltered depending on the frequency. If you have it weekly, you wouldnt be getting as much on a weekly basis as what you would be getting if you had it thre weekly. Also every three months I had n echocardiogram, as herceptin can do damage to your heart, but once again, they monitor for these side effects. I know I am from Oz and have noticed that some treatments ae different here from what you guys have there, but I just wanted to let you know my experience with herceptin. Good Luck.xxx

From what I can read, Mary, this sounds like a standard schedule - once a week with chemo, then every 3 weeks thereafter. The dose will be adjusted to work well in conjunction with the chemo drugs.
I think maybe the larger question here is, do you trust your new doctor? If not, and if you're going to have him for a prolonged time, then you might consider finding a different doctor, one you can trust. It's stressful to feel you have to second-guess the decisions your doctor makes regarding your treatment; better to find someone whose advice you feel you can follow without doubting. The move back home wasn't easy, going from Navy doctors to Air Force, not the same mind set but I will get in contact with my doctor on Monday in VA and ask her for her comments. I think you ladies for always replying and being ther for me.
