Feelin' Pretty Good

By Daria Tuesday, February 10, 2009

Today I woke up feelin' pretty good and I wanted to share it with the world. Often when you're undergoing cancer treatment, the good days may be few and far between, so I figure celebrate when I can.

Chemotherapy keeps me pretty tired and a bit moody. I've had a few ‘blue' days in a row but yesterday something changed. In fact, it started out pretty rough ... poor sleep and a bit agitated. My plan was to work on my college course that I'm taking during my treatment. I was just about in tears because I could not focus, my memory was awful and my eyes watered profusely ... especially when reading. The watery eyes are a side effect of the chemotherapy. I was ready to give up and quit the course saying to myself ... O.K. cancer you win ... I am no longer the person I used to be ... I am quitting.

After putting in a few hard hours of study ... things turned around and it all came together. I settled my agitation down, my focus and memory seemed to come back. Somewhere along the way, I decided, I was not going to let cancer win this round.

This is the second course I've registered for during my treatment and I do it because it gives me a sense of accomplishment.

The confidence I developed yesterday has followed me into today and I'm feelin' pretty good and I thought I'd share it with the world.

Thanks so much for sharing the good news with all of us in this community. It's great to be able to hear about good times, as well as the challenges and sadness. I never did figure out how to make my eyes stop burning and watering - hope you're able to lose THAT side effect ASAP. And what a great idea, taking courses during chemo - I'll bet it makes you feel like you're going in a positive direction and keeping some control of your life, despite all that's happened. I hope you stay on this plaeau for awhile, but if not - remember, time heals. Whenever you're down, it's temporary; good times will come again. Thanks again for sharing - PJH

Daria, you've done a great job of capturing that great irony of cancer.  Somehow all those days of fatigue and depression make the good days extra precious, and we appreciate them in a way we couldn't before cancer.  I remember how hard it was to focus and concentrate during chemo, but I'm sure the courses give you a chance to think about something else and plan for the future.
