Hi Marisa,

Thanks for your kind words about Mayo Clinic.  You are absolutely right about our electronic medical record being the "living, breathing beautiful aorta of Mayo."  When my father was being treated here a few years ago, we experienced the same thing you did.  Every doctor and caregiver he saw was up-to-date on Dad's medical status because they all had access to his records.  The unified medical record was invented at Mayo Clinic by Dr. Henry Plummer and actually goes back to 1907.  When the record was still in print format, Mayo used a system of pneumatic tubes between floors and buildings to move the records to the patients' next appointment.
