Reading the fine print
PJ Hamel
Sunday, September 28, 2008 at 11:44 AMPhyllis and Marisa, so right. My company donates to the National Breast
Cancer Foundation because they get a 4-star (highest) rating from Charity Navigator (as does the Breast Cancer Research Foundation) , which ranks different non-profits according to a number of factors, including how much $$ actually goes to the cause and not elsewhere. So caveat emptor, when you're spending your dollars on pink stuff. PJHre: re: re: Reading the fine print

I totally agree!

Monday, September 29, 2008 at 05:42 PMCorporations should start posting exactly where the money is going and who is the money helping. It isn't hard. Not to brag about my non-profit but I let everyone know that every single dollar in donations is going towards a woman or girl receiving a natural custom human hair wig (and not a horrible wig from a store.) I can show testimonials of every single woman helped. I also show the finished wig made from hair donations, which is unlike locks of love, where you donate hair but don't really know where its going. I've personally never seen a wig recipient in person. Who knows if they are really putting the donated hair on the wigs or if they are using processed hair like everyone else. Anyways, you have a point. Be careful when spending your money for a good cause. Make sure its going to the right place.

Friday, October 03, 2008 at 11:21 AMMika,
I completely agree that people should be careful when spending money for a cause. Cancer Vixen seems to have gotten it right! I've loved reading the posts from different Bath & Body Works stores and hearing about the inner workings of successfully selling a product for a cause. I have been convinced to purchase this stuff, which conviniently feeds my addiction to C.O. Bigelow lip products, and I know that many others here at HealthCentral have also done the same! Keep up the good work Mika and Marisa! We're cheering for you here at MyBreastCancerNetwork.com!
Best,
Julia

I agree that the motives of a company that gives to a charitable cause don't matter. What counts is the money that ends up with the charity. However, I'll continue to think twice before I reach for a pink product in October and read the fine print to see how much is actually going to the charity. I'll buy pink if it's a product I'd use anyway and if the cost and quality are comparable to my regular brand. If not, I'd rather send my money directly to any of the three cancer charities on my personal charitable donation list. I know that the money goes where I want it and that it's not getting eaten up by administrative costs.
