Breast Cancer

By Storm1991 Monday, January 17, 2011

I have a lump on the side af my breast for 2 to 3 months now and I thought it was just a pimple but now I don't know. My mother-in-law said that she thinks I should get it checked out that it looks like breast cancer. My mother said that it looks like a pimple and that I should put something on it to dry it out and if it doesn't do anything she'll call the family doctor. I really want to get it checked out because it being the for that amount of time. It feels hard to the touch and every once and a while it will fill with a little bit blood and show some vains. Breast Cancer runs on my Mother's side Of the family. My nipples had cloudy/clear (water?) come out 2 time already. I am scared of this because it runs in my family and being this young.

Well, it looks like you're 19 years old? If so, the chance of you having breast cancer is around 1 in 1 million, so thankfully this is probably some other issue. Still, since you've had this bump for a few months, you should get it checked out; any breast change lasting longer than a month needs to be checked by a doctor.

Since you mention some nipple discharge, you could have something hormonal going on, as well as perhaps an infection on your breast. So call the doctor - action trumps worry any day. Good luck - PJH

Will having it run it the family give me more of a chance though?

If your mother or sister has/had breast cancer, yes. If more than one second-degree relative (grandmother, aunt) has had it, yes, though less so. And this is just breast cancer, right? Not other kinds of cancer. Family history (as described) does increase your risk, but not by much; the vast majority of us who get breast cancer have no known risk factors.

Plus - what you describe doesn't sound like a breast cancer symptom. Lumps that can be seen on the outside, that are evident on the surface of your breast, are usually something else.

You seem quite stressed about this. Why not just go ahead and see a doctor? It's the quickest way to resolve the situation... Take care- PJH

Usually an ordinary pimple doesn't last two or three months, so you might have some other sort of skin infection.  If you have already tried the usual home remedies like warm compresses and acne treatments, then it's time to see the doctor.  You might need an antibiotic.  Discharge from the nipple is not unusual, but if it is only on this one side, you need to have the doctor check it out.  As PJ mentions, these are not typical breast cancer symptoms.  It's good that you are paying attention to your breast health.  Keep in mind that most of the problems that women might need to see a doctor about are not cancer.  It's good to be alert and proactive, but try not to let this worry you.
