Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

My baby is on the way...

By MD Wednesday, January 07, 2009

Well, it's been a while since I have been on only because I have been so busy.  I am happy to report that I did my last chemo treatment on December 23 (we hope) and that my pregnancy has progressed virtually unaffected.  Everything appears normal.  The baby's development is on target, she is at a healthy weight and all of my many, many tests have all been normal.  I am 34 weeks now and it looks like we will try to schedule a c-section for the last week of January or the first week of February.  since I still have one breast I will even be able to nurse since I will have not taken chemo in a month. That was good news to me since I nursed both of my older children for almost a year.

I guess what comes next is to get through the delivery and then start talking about radiation and reconstruction.  Boy, this is a long process!  But the Lord keeps me moving and I have really not had it too bad all things considered.

I hope everyone is doing well and will pray for all of our peace and health in the new year. Happy New Year!

I'm so very, very happy for you, Makala! After all of the hard times you've been through with treating your cancer - finally, a medical event to look forward to (well, at least the outcome...) I know she'll be a very special child, to have come through so much with you. I'm sending you positive energy, and blessings for a safe delivery (THEN radiation, etc.) Take care - PJH

Thank you for your well wishes and positive energy.  I certainly appreciate it!  I will keep you all posted.  This hasn't been easy and I still have a long way to go but I am thankful for this "wonderful break" and will certainly cherish this entire journey for the rest of my life!

All the best,

Makala

Hi Makala,

I got chill bumps reading your post.  I think you are incredibly brave and I can't imagine how you did it - pregnancy and chemo at the same time.  My hats off to you, really.  You are amazing.  I am a survivor as well, two years out now.  How are you feeling?  Please let me know.  I just wanted to write to you and commend you on how brave you are, not only to go through what you have and are going through, but also to do it with such strength and positive outlook.  I am here to support you.

Your survivor sister,

Maimah

I must admit that I was a little surprised to see you on this site. I saw you on Oprah and just cried and cried.  Throughout this process, I've felt somewhat disconnected from others with breast cancer or survivors since I seem to be the youngest person that I know with it.  I know that there are others out there in my area but I have not met them.  When I heard your story, I understood what you were saying and probably a great deal of what you were feeling.  My boys are the center of my world and everyday that I got up was for them.  I tried to keep things as normal as they could be so that their lives would not be negatively affected.  It was really good to hear and see someone else my age going through the same thing.  I also visited your website and think its a great resource.  I'm glad that you are on the other side of this now.  Thanks for your comment!

You're welcome Makala.  God is always listening, anticipating and sending us comfort in some form.  I felt the same way that you did when I was "going through it", which is why I created Tigerlily Foundation.

Please let me know if you need anything. I'd be happy to lend an ear, a heart or  words of inspiration... you're almost there and you're doing great!

Be blessed,
Maimah
