This is my first post since joining the group.  I was diagnosed in early July with DCIS in my left breast, the most curable breast cancer of all.  My cancer is an aggressive one but still favorable to most.  I had a lumpectomy and a sentinal node biopsy on August 21st and was told it was the "best possible results".

At my followup appointment my surgeon said that my margins were not as clean as needed and she wanted to do another surgery and remove more of a margin.   I had this done on September 11th.  Now I wait until September 24th to learn the results of my surgery.  I am hoping for the best news but this time I am going to be prepared in the event it is not.

If there is not any cancer in the margin removed this time, I will be scheduled for radiation once I have healed.  Here's hoping.

I will be back with an update once I know the results.

I'm sure it was difficult to find out about the margins after initially being told that the results were good.  I had a similar incident with my biopsy.  The preliminary report said no cancer, so I was terribly relieved.  Then a week later, I found out I did have cancer.  I'm very grateful to the pathologists who paid close attention to every slide despite their first impression and who found my cancer.  I hope you get good news from this second surgery.

Hi - Sometimes it does take 2 or 3 surgeries to get clean margins - the surgeon is walking a tightripe, trying to get clean margins while still leaving a good cosmetic result.

I'm thinking you should have radiation whatever the second surgery shows - I hope that was part of your initial plan? For DCIS, a lumpectomy with radiation is the standard of treatment.

If there are no clean margins, you'd probably want to consider a mastectomy (in which case you might not need radiation). But let's think positive, and hope this was your last surgery. Good luck - we look forward to hearing from you again when you get those good results! PJH
