I am a 2 time survivor of breast cancer. I have been through lumpectomy, radiation, double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction and 13 surgeries followed reconstruction due to complications. I do not want anyone reading this to not get reconstruction due to my complications because I would do it all over again. I pray I never have to. My mother is also a 2 time survivor of breast cancer. Ist a radical mastectomy on right breast & 13 years later a lumpectomy on left breast but she never endured chemo or radiation & I am grateful for that. This puts my daughter at high risk for breast cancer just because she is my daughter. I was appauled that when my daughter went for a mammogram due to her family history that she was basically told she needed to have a double mastectomy right away even though her mammogram was clear & has been for the past 4 years she has been having one. She is in her 30's and is married and have 2 wonderful children. She called me in tears about the recommendation. My feelings are this, don't fix what aint broke. She is vigilant & will coninue to be as long as I am alive because I will make sure of that. There is so much research being done on breast cancer thanks to the devotion of the women & men who have endured it that I truely believe either there will be a cure or if she does get breast cancer she will have better options by then & if she wants reconstruction surgery I feel there will be new & less invasive options available then. I can't nor will I judge anyone for doing what they feel is best for them & their situation. One advantage I do see to have a premtive mastectomy & reconstrucive surgery is the reconstructive result may be better due to the fact that the person has not had to endure radiation or chemo prior to the procedure. They also do not have the mental fear & uncertainty if they are going to die from breast cancer, or do they? As all of us who have had or have breast cancer should know even having had a double mastectomy, etc. breast cancer can appear any where else in our body. So my question is yes the breast tissue is gone but if you have the gene isn't tha gene in your whole body not just your breasts?
