Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

My Cancer Story

By Lois Friday, October 10, 2008

I am now, as of this last May, a 5 year survivor. I am taking Arimidex until January '09.  Dr Rao told me she would be more comfortable with me starting a new medication at that time.

In 2004, my husband was diagnosed with cancer of the stomach.  I was told by our gastroenterologist that this was usually fatal!  Prognosis was NOT good.  I went to my oncologist and asked her to take him as a patient.  She said she was not up on what the current treatment was for this type of cancer.  But that she would make some calls.  On our next visit, she told us what she had found out.  He was to start chemo along with radiation therapy together.  From her wisdom, and his surgery, he is now also a survivor...  3 years and still no sign of recurrance for him...and 5+ years for me!!!

I'm truely happy for you and your husband. I know you are grateful to have found such a wonderful Dr who saved both of your lives.

Lois, we share the experience of a birthday diagnosis.  Mine was ten years ago for my 50th birthday.  Your story is a real lesson in learning how to advocate for yourself and later for your husband.  Being assertive with office staff and finding the right doctors is such so important to being able to navigate our complicated medical system.  I'm delighted that you are doing well.

Yes, the "Birthday Surprise" was not what I wanted, but I knew that there was something.  I just was not really ready to face it before Christmas (when I found my lump).  My husband's cancer was not so obvious.  He just started feeling sick (sick to stomach sick) but it would pass in a few seconds...  Then these spells got longer and longer.  He thought it was a reaction from a new med he was taking.  Dr. changed his med number of times, and finally told him he needed to go to GI doctor. Her name is Dr. Shireen Gadallah, and she is also a very good doctor.  She told us right up front before the results came back what it was, and told us to find a good oncologist...which we already had.  Thank God!

Thank you Louis for sharing.  I am now on aremidex since early January 2010.

Your story has really helped and encouraged me.  Would love to hear from you  currently
