Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Unable to schedule a mamogram

By mauld Friday, December 28, 2007
I am a 55 year old woman who does not have a primary physician. My company recently told all employees that they would assist in scheduling mamograms for those interested via a local hospital (Lenox Hill in NYC). I signed up and was contacted by the hospital, and was given a date to come in.  Yesterday, I received a call from Lenox Hill stating that as I did not have a recommending Dr who would give me a 'script' for the procedure, I was ineligible and could not have the mamogram! They then cancelled my appointment until I am able to produce a prescription from a personal physican for the procedure.  As I do not have one, I will not be able to be screened for cancer. There is a strong history of cancer on both sides of my family and while I do not need a primary doctor, I would like to have the exam. Aside from just walking into any doctors office (assuming I can get an appointment)... what can I do?

Hello. Welcome to our community. I'm glad you've found us.

I'm sorry to hear of your unfortunate situation. As you've said, probably the best way to be able to proceed with a mammogram through the program your employer is offering is to obtain a primary physician. However, I understand your reservations in doing so if you really don't "need" right one now.

Another option -- so you CAN indeed be screened for breast cancer -- is to take advantage of one of the many resources that offer FREE MAMMOGRAMS. Take a look:

Free Mammogram FAQs: Mammograms for Undeserved Women

http://www.healthcentral.com/breast-cancer/c/78/15110/faqs-women/

Although not as easy as the organized program your employer is offering, it IS a great option -- for many women. Challenge aside, stay focused on having the test - it's an important one, as you already know.

If you need more information, let me know.

Keep us posted on how this turns out for you. Best of luck with the mammogram you WILL have!

Regards,

Maria
