Hi, I was diagnosed with Stage 0 DCIS, and after lumpectomy, turned out it was high grade comedo type with a 5-51/2 centimeter affected area. The margins were clear on the first try and no sentinel node biopsy was done, but now that I have been diagnosed hormone receptor negative, I'm torn between...

Hi, I was diagnosed with DCIS high grade with necrosis and had biopsies that found out the grade - did you not have a biopsy? was it only when the lumpectomy had been performed that it was found out.??? just curious.  Mine was 5mm and did start to invade - I had a lumpectomy which took away the DCIS and they had found 1mm of invasion - I immediately asked for a mastectomy - they did it and also took 13 lymph nodes away, all were clean of any cancer cells etc, so I was absolutely delighted with an excellent prognosis.  I differ from your case as I am hormone positive, so am on Tamoxifen for 5 years to help prevent from recurrence, so am unable to say anything about radiation and MRI.  It sounds like yours is still in stitu so they have caught you at an early stage.  I wish you well.

    Best wishes,

    Hazel

    Thanks, Hazel for your reply.

After the mammogram showed a 1 cm. calcification trail, I had a needle biopsy that showed the high grade comedo-type, but it wasn't until the lumpectomy that the size of the affected area was shown to be so large., Also the hormone negative receptor aspect makes treatment more difficult.  I go to a multi-disciplinary clinic at U.C.L.A. Revlon breast Center soon to get a second opinion. Maybe others can learn from me, as I have been so generously given to by others.

Hi Michele, great to hear that you are feeling so good.  I am curious as to what your situation was, ie grade, size, treatment and any other information - to see if it was similar to mine.

    Best wishes, Hazel

Hi Hazel, well my left breast were i found tumor was grade 3 and tumor size was 4.2cm with tri-neg they took 20 nodes 1pos, my treatment was Tac /taxotere/adryamacin/cytoxan every 21day for 6 rounds, was told no radiation because i did a double mastectomy, and then in my right breast to my suprise i had dcis stage 0 was not ever detected on mri or pet scan ,i just thought to myself i have heard so many stories of breast cancer coming back in the other breast and i just didnt want to go through this again if i dont have to. My surgion said i made a great choice to take both my breast so im am so greatful that both surgion and oncologist gave me the option to do that. I trusted my gut feeling and my faith in GOD, and i can tell my story know.

Thanks to all who have responded to my inquiry earlier this month. I had several surgeries (lumpectomy, and sentinel lymph node removal-1 node and it turned out to be negative. Went to U.C.L.A. Revlon center and was recommended to do radiation in my case, and be checked, often for a possible re-occurance. There is a question as to whether tamoxifen would be beneficial in prevention of a cancer in the other breast, since the breast with DCIS was hormone-negative. I start radiation soon.
