Unfortunately, nobody knows what causes cancer, but I'm grateful for all of the research that is being done to find a cure.
My mother, Gerri - the namesake for our skincare line, EmmGerri - was diagnosed 22 years ago with breast cancer. To this day, she still reminds me of how God saved her life. She recalls experiencing a slight, temporary pain in her chest and finding a lump. At first, my mom, a nurse, thought of going to the doctor. But when the pain subsided, she decided against it.
Then, what seemed like a coincidence occurred. Mom was at work at the hospital when a surgeon she knew who specialized in breast surgery walked into the room because he had forgotten his keys. My mother hesitated before mentioning to him what she'd recently discovered. He told her it was probably nothing but to come see him anyway. Thank God she did.
So if you've been putting off a doctor's appointment or have been afraid to make one, please reconsider. I'm not just trying to tell you an entertaining story. I'm trying to save your life.

Karen,
Thanks for sharing your mother's moving story with us. She was very lucky -- or saved or blessed -- to run into the doctor that day. But more importantly, she found the courage to ASK about it, and your point is an excellent one: for women who have or think they might have a breast lump to get it checked out. Saving a life -- your OWN -- could be as simple as that.
Great that you've joined our community. We'd love to hear more from you!
Best,
Maria
