TIPS TO SURVIVING TREATMENT: 1. BE INFORMED

By Janielle Monday, April 19, 2010

Information is vital. Yes your doctor went to school and studied medicine and I'm sure he or she is up-to-date on the latest treatment options, as I am sure they have your best interest at heart. However no one knows you like you know yourself and ultimately all decisions have to be made BY YOU. Your doctor will make suggestions based on the facts but you have to say yes or no to those suggestions. Shouldn't you know what your consenting to?  I have found that in difficult situations we like to 'blindly' follow the lead of our medical practioners. I would like to discourage this practice for two reasons;

1. Doctors treat patients based on SIMILARITES to previous cases. However, there may be variables unknown to him/her which makes your case, alhough 'similar 'completely different.  Eg. At 25 I was diagnosed with a triple negative type breas cancer. Should my treatment pattern be the same as that of a 65 year old with a SIMILAR case?

2. With knowledge comes POWER. Power to take control of a situation that is otherwise out of your control. You see, there is nothing more settling and calming than making an informed decision, you feel as though you are standing on a firm foundation, as the strong winds of treatment try to toss you to and fro. Even if your decision is in agreement with your doctors suggestion it is most 'relaxing' when you have weighed the odds and come to your own desicion as opposed to 'doing exactly s the doctor ORDERED'. And remember a peaceful mind is one of the key elements to getting through your treatment.
