Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Sisters with breast cancer

By Joy Whitfield Saturday, March 31, 2007

We are a family of five (5) girls. My oldest sister (turning 50 next month) is a seven year surviver. My youngest sister (39) was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago with breat cancer. She has decided to have both breasts removed. She also had genetic tests done and we are waiting for results. My other sister (49) is having a lump removed & tested next week. This week my doctor found a lump in my breast and I am scheduled for a diagnostic mammo.

Does anyone have info on multiple cases of breast cancer in one family or know of a good resource for our research?

Family Affair, sounds like this cancer is running in your family, unfortunately. I'm glad your sister is getting genetic testing - this may point all of you in aa focused direction, if she tests positive for aa gene mutation. In the meantime, try this:

FORCE is a nonprofit organization for women with increased risk of cancer due to family history and genetic status, and for members of families in which a BRCA mutation may be present. Web site: facingourrisk.org. Also, they have a toll-free help-line a chat room, and acommunity message board - all good resources for connecting with other women facing what you are. Go here for more info.: www.facingourrisk.org/FORCE_community/helpline.html
Good luck as you go forward - PJ

Have you seen FORCE? It's for women at high risk of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer.

Hope that helps.  And please share other resources you find with the rest of us!

Any info on this new technology would be appreciated.

I just came from a 2 day FORCE convention this weekend in Tampa, Florida.  It stands for Facing our risk of Cancer Empowered, at www.facingourrisk.org. It was a great convention with 470 participants from all over the U.S. and many countries.  This website has wealth of info.  I hope you have a genetic councelor helping with your testing, it is very emotional even with a councelor, regardless of the results.  Best of wishes to all of you.
