Monday, January 07, 2008 at 01:18 PMThank you for info- My mom is scheduled for surgery on Wed, today taking the stress test they have found something wrong with her heart, so at this time, I guess its up in the air. Like I have told others, she is a very strong woman, she just turned 79 Sat.
has been through colon cancer 7-8 yrs ago. Last year this month-lung cancer, they have removed partial lung and know this. I can feel for her about getting down, I am staying strong for her and telling her will also beat this-never give up. We just took her snowmobiling up in Northern Wi, she loves to drive her snowmobile, it was great for her. Will keep you informed thank you for everything and have a great day. becki

chemo vs. radiation
PJ Hamel
Thursday, January 03, 2008 at 09:03 PMHi acceber - First of all, your mother's behavior sounds very typical to me. As mothers, we ALWAYS want to protect our children, from everything. I'm sure that's what she's trying to do - keep you from feeling bad. Be patient - be present. She'll open up to you when she feels the time is right. As for chemo vs. radiation, usually chemo is given for a more "serious" cancer - lymph node involvement, bigger tumor, more aggressive, etc. So if she's having surgery and radiation, and NOT chemo, I'd say that's a very good sign. Probably they'll start with a lumpectomy (partial removal), and if that's successful, hooray! If not, they can always go back and do a mastectomy (total breast removal). Anyway, good luck to both of you, and welcome to this site- PJH

Monday, January 07, 2008 at 01:13 PMThank you for your info, it helped alot. This site, I am so glad I stumbled upon it. She is due for surgery on Wed, she is having a stress test today, just spoke to her, and she said they found something wrong with her heart, unsure what yet. She is a very strong woman, she justed turned 79 Sat. She still goes snowmobiling-in fact we just got back New Years day from Wi!! She has had colon cancer 7-8 yrs ago has beat that, partial lung removed 1 year ago this month and now this, I think sometimes she is just getting fed up with all this going on, I cant blame her, Its just hard sometimes and I guess everyone feels the same about that commet. We just have to be strong and win the battle!! Well have a great day. take care of yourself.

Hi
survivor823
Saturday, January 05, 2008 at 01:18 AMStay strong for her. I know it's scary. Do you go to her appointments with her? If so, that could help ease your mind a little. Surgery, chemo and radiation is frightening. But it's all cureable. I had both breasts removed, reconstruction twice and chemo. Before going into any type of treatment whether it's chemo, radiation, and surgery her physicians will do everything to make sure she'll be able to handle it. Usually bone scans of her body and heart. For me surgery was easy. The treatment is hard more mentally and draining. Just be there for he whenever. As for as which is for her they won't know until surgery is decided. Remember it's a personal choice as far as a mastectomy versus a lumpectomy. And the fear of recurrence. We're all here for you and her. She'll open up in time.

good news

Thursday, January 10, 2008 at 11:06 AMHi,
I think it is good news if your mother was told that she will receive radiation after her surgery. I am a survivor and know many survivors. Usually now, they do a lumpectomy with radiation following, for early stage cancers. Chemo. is reserved for those at high-risk and stage 2,3, or 4 generally.
I was considered a high-risk stage I so I had everything available: chemo, radiation, mastectomy, ovaries removed, and on tamoxifen (to block estrogen) for 5 years.
Best of luck to your mom. It sounds like a good prognosis to me! :)
