Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

O'Cedar Semi-Finalist

By Poteet Monday, August 17, 2009

Hi-

There's two pieces of good news here.  One is that I haven't posted in while.  Time has moved along as it tends to do and life has moved along with it.  Now that the primary battle with breast cancer is won, I've been busy watching my son grow and living day to day.  Cancer has taken a back burner in my life, and as a result, the posts have as well.  In my mind, this is good news for me.  Maybe it will also offer hope to some of you just starting out.

But that doesn't mean I've forgotten it.  Or my need (Choice) to help others through it.  So, I entered the O'Cedar essay contest with the wish to publish "It's the little Gotcha's that Getcha with Breast Cancer."   It's my desire to use the $1000 award to publish my story, highlighting the little things that surprised me along the way.  Hopefully the knowledge will help another woman be more prepared.

The second piece of good news is that I am a semi-finalist in the contest.  I need votes to make it to the finals.  (Mine is buried mid-column, mid-way down.  It's not likely to get a lot of random votes.)

O'Cedar has 40 essays published.  Even if you choose not to vote for my wish, I encourage you to vote!  Help O'Cedar grant wishes to some of us touched by BC.

My best to everyone.  Take care,

Thanks so much.  I've read the other essays and a lot of them are filled with ways to share hope and support.  Still, thanks so much for voting for me.

I visited your site, and I voted,so thank you very much.  I am a 3 year survivor of DCIS in my left breast.  Now they've found something in the right one. I'm having it romoved on Thursday.  Hopefully, it will prove to be nothing.  Like you, I spent much of the past three years since treatment in just living day to day.  I can't say weeks, but days would go by without me having a single thought about cancer.  What I am trying to do now is to live in the moment.  I keep reminding myself that all there really is is right now.  Having cancer has tought me to squeeze all the life I can out of each moment that I've been given.  But sometimes that is so very hard to do.

It is my sincere hope and prayer that your surgery proves uneventful and that the mass is benign.  Please know good thoughts are with you.

Thank you so much for voting for me at what has to be a trying time for you.  I hated the waiting...

Take care of yourself.  Let me know how things come out.

Have you gotten any results from the contest yet?

It is so kind of you to ask.  Yes, I got the Fed Ex indicating I am a grand prize winner just yesterday.

I am so very excited and somewhat humbled.  This whole experience has been a blast.  The number of people who supported me was heart touching, in such a good way.

I'll put more in a sharepost after a bit.

Thanks again for asking.

Glad to hear you won, I am a grand prize winner as well. Are we allowed to share this with everyone now?  I know the results are going up on the O'Cedar site in October but I don't remember reading anything that restricted us from announcing.

Congratulations to you too!  I read the letter and rules and didn't see anything to prohibit us from telling anyone.  The way I feel about it, I'm celebrating and thanking O'Cedar.  I covered my base by including the "potential", just in case.  But this has been such a fun experience, I want to share.

aftercancer.... do you have the blog?

What about you? What's your plan?

I want to publish "It's the little gotcha's that getcha' with breast cancer."  It's my story highlighting the little things that no one told me about ahead of time.
