Just Diagnosed with Cancer? Chat with Experts

Adventures With Wendy - My Blog

By Wendy F Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Hello Everyone! I'm new here...I was diagnosed with breast cancer on August 19, 2009. I am the tenth cancer in my family, and so I opted for a double mastectomy rather than a lumpectomy. I had done the genetic screening three years ago and they told me I had none of the genetic markers.

My surgery was September 15th. They removed two sentinel nodes and told me both were negative! Great news!

Last week, the doctor's office phoned to tell me one of the nodes was, in fact, positive. And so yesterday, October 20th, I went back into surgery to get more nodes removed.

I am now awaiting the pathology report, which should be ready in 2-4 weeks. It's then I'll find out whether or not the cancer has spread.

As a therapy, I created a blog when I was first diagnosed. Now I am using it to help encourage others and to journal my thoughts and experiences.

It's fun! I'm a singer/songwriter/comedian, so I like to include funny stories and video clips! It's also an inspirational blog, designed to cheer you and to encourage you in your journey.

Please do visit it and let me know what you think!

Blessings to each one of you,

Hello,

Last year I went through almost the same thing like you: lumpectomy, lumpectomy, mastectomy, hormon treatment. Everything is OK except my mind. I try to stay "positive" but I can not 100%. That's why I would like to read your jocks, your funny stories, to see your beutiful smile. Thank you, and good luck to all of us.

Oh, yuck....so sorry you had to go through all that - I do hope you had some good people around you, supporting you. I know it can be hard to be positive, but it's easier if you surround yourself with uplifting people...do you have that option?

I have some comedy clips on my website: http://www.wendy.ca  Look for the "Funny Videos" link on the side at the left. I hope you will laugh!

You can also email me at my private email address on the "Contact" page of the website.

God bless you, Nadia, and email me again to let me know how you're doing,

Love, Wendy

Hey Wendy,

Just read your blog.

I am trying to wrap my head around the same possible outcome. 10 people in your family and no BRAC gene? Wow. Cancer IS tricky.

Keep me posted. When is your Bi Mast going to happen?

Cheers,

Peg.

Happened already! September 15. They removed two sentinels which tested negative in the OR, but once they re-examined them more closely, one was positive, so this past Tuesday, Oct. 20, I had to go back into surgery to get a bunch of lymph nodes removed. Now I wait up to a month to find out the verdict - are they mostly negative, mostly positive, all negative? all positive? Ah, the drama....the suspense!!! Phhtttt....

I also intend to call up Genetic Testing and tell them that I don't think they made it particularly clear that when I tested negative for the BRAC gene, it did NOT mean I was "safe". It just meant that I was clear for that specific gene. Sheesh. I went this past 3 years thinking I'd be okay, which, given my family history, seems pretty ridiculous now in retrospect....

How are *you*? What's your story? Or maybe I should know how to navigate this site well enough by now to know where to click & see your story on my own...?  :)

Ok, so I just read yr profile & see yr lumpectomy is scheduled for mid-October - does that mean you've had it already?  How are you doing?

As you may well be aware, here in Montreal, Quebec, we're on socialized medicine, so apart from the taxes we pay into it, every procedure is free with our Medicare card - mammogram, biopsy, surgery, aftercare, etc. etc. How do you find rapidity of service there in the US? How are the facilities? Are you satisfied with the care you receive?

Thinking of you, and thanks for reading my blog! Cool
