Chemo FAQS: TC (Taxol/Taxotere + Cytoxan)

By PJ Hamel, Health Guide Thursday, September 09, 2010
Q. Unfortunately, I’ve just found out I need to have chemo. With no node involvement I thought I’d avoid it, but my Oncotype score is in the moderate range, so my oncologist is prescribing TC. What can I expect? A. TC is currently one of the most common types of chemotherapy given to wom...

Very well explained, I had just about every lousy symptem.  I did better with the AC over the Taxotere.  It has been about a year, and my nails are still a mess.

So sorry to hear that, Kathy. Taxotere can definitely be a bear. From what I've heard, though, your nails DO finally come back; hope you start seeing some improvement soon- PJH

I'm currently undergoing treatment with TC.  Yesterday I had to see my ono because of very bad underarm, ichy irritation. He thought it was yeast and precribed something for it.  A little better today, but still very swollen and irritated.

Hmmm... I didn't do TC, but I did FEC (same "C") - and had this same itchy underarm problem. Wonder if it's simply a less-common side effect? Hope you're feeling better today- PJH

Hi- I had a very rough time too- 14 months of weekly chemo for ovarian cancer with every side effect. My nails were terrible, bleeding and dropping off but now  (4 months later) they look normal but are very brittle still. I took a high dose multi B vitamen through out the chemotherapy which probably helped my nails and my hair. hope you do well- Ann

The possibility of permanent alopecia after chemotherapy is quite rare, but seems to be more common with Taxotere than its "relative" Taxol, or than with other chemo drugs.

Some BC survivors who have been left with this condition feel they were not adequately warned about this possible side effect of Taxotere, and have placed videos on Youtube, created blogs about it, and have posted about it in various breast cancer forums to warn others about the possibility, and to seek other injured parties who would like to join a lawsuit against the phamaceutical company which makes this drug.

I finished my treatment of TC last March. I am amazed at how well it went. The side effects were not as bad as I expected. The hair loss was the hardest and it's still taking it's time to come back. Make-up and a wig make it all ok for now.

Had I known it was going to go that well I would have saved alot of tears.Smile

I had my 2nd Taxotere chemo - in additon to Carboplatin and Herceptin - yesterday. Did get severe burning under my left arm pit and on the left side of my breast. Asked nurse to slow the IV down which helped. At home, I noticed a liquid-filled pouch where it had been burning. It dissipated by midnight. Did anyone else have such a reaction? My hair is falling out, too. I washed it with Nioxin, but to no avail. Anything I can do to help prevent my nails from falling out? Thanks. Angie

Angie, I've heard that extreme cold helps quell certain of chemo's side effects. There are apparently ice caps women wear on their heads that seem to prevent hair loss; I wonder if putting your fingertips in ice as you receive the chemo would help with nail loss? Just a thought... Best of luck to you as you go through treatment - PJH

PJH: Thanks for your reply. I'll try your tip for my fingernails. It's too late for my hair!! Angie

Well, look to the future - they'll both come back! Also, try chewing ice chips the first 5 minutes - supposed to prevent mouth sores. Take care, Angie - PJH
