Eating Well With Breast Cancer

By PJ Hamel, Health Guide Wednesday, October 03, 2007
Food is life. It fuels our bodies–literally. The energy released by burning calories keeps our hearts going, our lungs pumping, our brains functioning. We can actually go without food for quite some time. But eventually, we shut down and die; without fuel, the furnace sputters out.Food is life ...

Dear P. J.,

I received my KAF Baker's Catalogue e-mail and I was surprised to find out about your fairly recent bout with breast cancer.  I have been receiving the e-mails for several years now and you feel like an old friend so, while I was happy to read that you are better now, I am saddened that you and your family had to endure this.

My Grandmother and Aunt have both had breast cancer and, thankfully,  they are both survivors.  I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers and I wish you a long and happy life filled with many, many more culinary delights.

Take care,

Thanks to PJ for creating such a delicious cookie recipe and thanks to Sarah for baking them!

I tend to stick with whole grains for everything but baking...this was my first time eating a 'healthy' cookie that actually tastes good.

Deann, thanks for your kind thoughts and wishes. I love being able to connect with so many people, both through the King Arthur e-mails and the SharePosts on this site. So many of us have gone through breast cancer and come out the other side stronger, healthier, better... many haven't been so lucky, thus we keep waiting and hoping for the cure. In the meantime–we all try to stay positive and live our lives with as much joy and gusto as we can.

Katherine, my motto is "Whole grains CAN taste good." Especially when they're in cookies! Glad you enjoyed them. Cheers, everyone! - PJH

Hi, PJ--

I feel like Deann-- that you're an old friend from the King Arthur catalog & e-newsletters, and wish you continued good health.  I use KA wholewheat flour & unbleached flour all the time to make all of our bread, and enjoy seeing descriptions of all the treats, even if I don't make them very often because of their richness.

Hey, Lisa - I feel like, if I'm going to make something rich, I might as well do it with white whole wheat flour so the fiber moves it through the system fast! (Would that it worked that way...SIGH). Thanks for posting- and remember - organic white whole wheat is THE BEST! - PJH

Dear fellow foodie,  I love to cook and devour also.  After breast cancer and subsequent treatment and drugs I hit the books, doctors and internet.  What I have discovered is simply, avoid acid foods, beef up on fruits in the morning, vegies in the afternoon and evening, avoid all alcohol, processed sugar and caffiene.  If this sounds too restricting, trust me, it isn't.  There are so many options out there to eat and drink that can enhance our health instead of destroy it.  Cheers to our faith in God above, and a different way of life here  on earth.   Sam Kuball
