The Oncology Social Worker: Help When You Need It

By PJ Hamel, Health Guide Wednesday, July 25, 2012
Cancer is not only emotionally and physically devastating; the treatment process can be confusing and frustrating, at a time when you’re least able to deal with the challenges of bureaucracy, and necessary changes to your everyday life. Thankfully, there’s someone you can turn to for help...

Thanks, PJ for reminding people about this valuable resource. Cancer patients shouldn't trybto go it alone. In some hospitals a "nurse navigator" does some of these same functions for figuring out the system. Everyine needs to establish a relationship with the social worker or someone else in the hospital who can help ort out all the luggage that accompanies medical treatment for cancer.

And thanks for mentioning the navigator program, Phyllis - it's been gradually appearing in hospitals over the past 5 years or so. The nurse navigator will step in right from day #1, and "hold your hand" all the way through what can be a very confusing and stressful treatment process. Excellent resource! PJH
