I see breast cancer research as a part of a whole package of improving health of everyone.  The basic research into breast cancer will almost certainly lead to discoveries that will help people with other types of cancer and maybe even other diseases.  Look at the crossover use of drugs like Fosamax, for example.  On the other side of the equation, it's not just free mammograms that are needed.  Americans need access to all kinds of preventive health care, especially for heart health since heart disease kills more people than cancer.  If a woman gets in for that free mammogram, maybe she'll talk to her doctor about other health issues.  Keeping our environment clean and educating people to read and think critically are other elements vital to fighting not just cancer, but other medical problems.  Good for Sen. Clinton for focusing on breast cancer, and she has a history of wanting to improve health care.  I hope that her bringing breast cancer research into the political discussion leads to making it a part of all candidates' platforms.  But I also want to see more attention to how issues are connected.
