By PJ Hamel, Health Guide Tuesday, April 22, 2008
Hey there, you with the hot flashes, night sweats, sleeplessness, and nasty moods—thinking about taking some hormones to ease the rocky path through menopause? It’s easy; just take a pill to replace that estrogen your ovaries aren’t making any more, and before you know it you’...

I am very concerned that Oprah's recent take on HRT (might be helpful - check with your doctor) may result in an increased incidence of breast cancer in just a few years.

Please take a look at my website and blog and February message:  I would really like your feedback.  (breasthealthandhealing.org) As a breast cancer surgeon who is now working hard to understand the causes of breast cancer, and prevent the disease as much as possible, I think the HRT debate needs more "press" out here in cyberspace.

God bless you.  Dr. Ruddy

Nice site, Kathleen. Thanks for connecting.

I think the HRT debate is bound to cycle up and down - we were once told it was the cure-all; now we're told by most doctors that a minimal amount of HRT, for the shortest effective time, might be acceptable.

We've devoted a lot of space here at mybreastcancernetwork.com to this debate over the past few years. I continue to watch the studies carefully. Right now, I beieve it should still be a woman's choice to take HRT, so long as she knows she's increasing her risk of breast cancer. As with any drug treatment, we have to balance the effectiveness of the drug with the seriousness of side effects, then make a personal decision. Some women simply seem unable to get through menopause without the help of drugs, and they're willing to chance cancer. I believe it's their right to do this.

I'm going to look further into Oprah's take on this. Thanks for alerting me. And thanks for your passion about this subject. Good luck with the book- PJH
