Nipple Discharge: When Should I Worry?

By PJ Hamel, Health Guide Thursday, November 20, 2008
Because breast cancer has been the subject of so much media attention and marketing, most American women know this message by heart: changes in your breasts should be reported to your doctor. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to know which changes are truly serious, and which are nothing more than ...

JUST FEEL YOUR BOOBIES!!

JANUARY 16TH, 2010 - I AM A SURVIVOR! (7 YEAR)

C'mon ladies FEEL YOUR BOOBIES!

Guy's LOVE YOUR LADY AND KNOW YOUR LADY, show them this note!

EARLY DETECTION IS SO IMPORTANT!!

I always did my monthly BOOBIE CHECKS!

At 37, Knowing my body well and finding something abnormal is what led me to the doctor and the diagnosis of Ductal Carcinoma Insitu (DCIS) Stage 0. Diagnosis given over the phone is not a nice way to hear it, but I guess neither is a phone call telling you that the doctor would like you to come into his office. After my doctor's phone call, I called my (soon to be X) hubby. My hubby took almost 3 hrs to get home from work that day (he didn't want to piss anyone off by leaving early!!), while I freaked out the whole time. Feeling like a tornado around me, my life was being sucked out of me, numb and in shock, scared, worried about getting thru the battle ahead, my kids, etc. All alone for nearly 3 hrs...

DCIS cannot be felt at this stage, if at all.

Abnormal things to look for;

lumps (can be really, really tiny. Just watch closely to see if it gets bigger)

rough patches on the skin, sometimes you can't see them but you can feel them! If they don't go away within 2 wks, have it ck'd and regardless of the doctors diagnosis, until it is gone, keep aware of the area and if there are any changes with it, let the doctor know!

red pimply spot (inflamed areas)

nipples change shape

Nipple discharge - February '02 right breast, just a duct or two was swollen, like engorged if nursing. My son was then 5, so that was not the issue. I began lactating a tiny bit and within a few days a small area around my nipple became inflamed. I thought it was just an infection due to the engorgement. We no longer had medical insurance due to my husband having recently been laid off, so I spoke to my doctors nurse and she told me to wait a few more days to see if it cleared up, it did. But one day soon after, I was laying on my side, my arm pushing up against my boob, I got up and I noticed a smear of reddish brown on my arm. I realized where it came from. Again, I figured this was just due to the recent inflammation. This continued thru out the summer. Dec '02 having medical insurance again and knowing that nipple discharge that is not whitish and/or clear was not normal, I had it ck'd and then biopsied. Dec 20th I got the news and by January 16th I was cancer free...

I feel guilty that, though my only choice, my prognosis of having a skin sparing Mastectomy and reconstruction was life changing, I did not have to fight the fight like so many brave woman do...

If I wasn't so in-tuned with my body and willing to go to my doctor and "FIND OUT", (no matter how scary that can be...) I may not have paid any attention to the sign and brushed it off as the remains of an infection and things could have been much more dire for me had the DCIS been left to grow and spread...

DCIS AND MY BI-LATERAL SKIN SPARING MASTECTOMY- 2 REASONS THAT DCIS TOOK TWO -

1. MOST IMPORTANTLY - AS A MOTHER THE RISK JUST TO KEEP ONE BREAST WAS JUST WAY TOO HIGH!! I WASN'T WILLING TO RUN THE RISK OF IT RETURNING IN MY LEFT BREAST SO I TOLD THEM, "TAKE THEM BOTH!" BECAUSE OF THE PATH I CHOSE I DIDN'T NEED CHEMO, RADIATION OR MEDICINE.

I HAVE HEARD OF MANY PEOPLE, MY MOTHER-IN-LAW FOR ONE WHO YEARS AGO HAD A LUMPECTOMY ONLY TO RUN THE RISK OF CANCER RETURNING. 9 YRS LATER IT DID AND A MASTECTOMY FOLLOWED. BUT HAD THE CANCER NOT BEEN FOUND RIGHT AWAY THE SECOND TIME AROUND, SHE COULD HAVE HAD MUCH MORE TO DEAL WITH. I BELIEVE SHE HAD A SERIES OF RADIATION TREATMENTS AND HAD TO TAKE MEDICINE FOR 5 YEARS.

AND THERE WAS A DOCTOR, DR. JERRI NEILSON FITZGERALD WHO DID RESEARCH IN ANTARCTICA. SHE FOUND A LUMP JUST AS THE LAST PLANE TOOK OFF FOR THE WINTER AND WOULDN'T RETURN FOR MONTHS LATER. SHE MONITORED AND TREATED HERSELF AND SENT TESTING RESULTS OVER THE INTERNET TO SURGEONS IN THE STATES. THE MILITARY FORMED A RESCUE MISSION IN THE WORST POSSIBLE TIME TO FLY INTO ANTARCTICA, THEY SUCCEEDED IN GETTING HER HOME. SHE HAD A LUMPECTOMY AND FOLLOWUP TREATMENT, INCLUDING A MASTECTOMY. SHE WENT INTO REMISSION BUT THE CANCER RETURNED (IN THE OTHER BREAST?) AND HAD SPREAD INTO OTHER AREAS AND SADLY HER PROGNOSIS WAS NOT GOOD... I JUST CHECKED GOOGLE SADLY SHE RECENTLY PASSED AWAY...

I AM SHOWING YOU THIS PICTURE...
ALMOST 7 YEARS POST-OP, AFTER A TOTAL HYSTERECTOMY (WHICH CAUSED IN ME MEDICALLY INDUCED MENOPAUSE, MIM) ONE YEAR LATER, AFTER FIGHTING TO GET MY OLD BODY BACK BY EATING HEALTHY, EXERCISE AND BIO-IDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT, I NOW LOOK AND FEEL BETTER THAN EVER!

I'M SHOWING YOU THIS PICTURE SO THAT SOMEDAY, HEAVEN FORBID, YOU OR A LOVED ONE IS FACED WITH THE CHOICE OF LOSING HER GIRLS... DON'T WORRY!

LIFE IS MORE IMPORTANT THEN HANGING ON TO THEM AND I'M LIVING PROOF THAT SOMETIMES THEY CAN MAKE THEM BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER!

THANK GOD FOR THE MARVEL OF MODERN DAY MEDICINE AND I'M SURE IT'S IMPROVED EVEN MORE IN THE PAST 7 YEARS!!

IF ANYONE IS GOING THRU BC (I GAINED ABOUT 20LBS) OR THE LOSS OF HORMONES OR KNOWS SOMEONE WHO IS AND NEEDS SOMEONE TO TALK TO, OR IF YOU ARE STRUGGLING TO LOSE WEIGHT, WORKING OUT TILL YOUR BLUE IN THE FACE AND YOU SEE ABSOLUTELY NO CHANGES IN YOUR BODY... ASK ME HOW TO LOSE THE WEIGHT!

DUE TO MIM - THAT WAS ME 6 YRS AGO. IN THE PAST 9 MONTHS, AT 5'7" I WENT FROM 138 LBS POST-OP'S TO CURRENTLY 120 LBS! YOU MAY THINK THAT IN 9 MONTHS LOSING 15 LBS SEEMED TO TAKE A LONG TIME, BUT WHEN YOU'RE DEALING WITH HORMONE IMBALANCE THAT PLAYS A MAJOR FACTOR IN HOW YOUR BODY RESPONDS.

I have clear salty liquid coming out of my left breast, I was diagnosed with polycystic ovarian syndrome, I have no children and I am not sure if I can have any, and there is a history of breast and womb cancer in my family... is it time for me to worry?

Hi - Not sure if you read this post on nipple discharge; it'll tell you what youneed to know about possible causes for this, and whether/when to see a doctor. IN general, a clear discharge is usually due to hormonal causes. Still, if it lasts longr than a month, it's best to see a doctor to find out what's going on. Good luck - PJH

I have dark green to black, coming out of one nipple. I went to the Dr. and did a test to see if is blood or not, and it was. (blood) what could it be.

Your doctor should be able to recommend a course of action for further testing. You may need to have a ductogram (galactogram), which is a way to determine what's causing issues in and around your nipple. At any rate, don't just brush this off; as with any breast change, you need to find out what's causing the discharge. So call your doctor, and ask what's next. Take care - PJH

There where blood test and they all came back norm. So does that mean that I dont have any thing to bad. Supose to get a Mam. but it is not till the end of the week, and wont get the results till Jan. Is there anything I should still be scared about. ( because the blood was norm.) sorry for my spelling.

Never mind the spelling - no prob! A blood test won't tell you anything about possible problems in your nipple; you really do need one of the tests I mentioned. When you have your mammogram, tell the tech you're having bloody discharge from your nipple - maybe that'll start the wheels rolling. If not, call your primary care doctor and ask about the tests I mentioned; tell him/her you're worried, and want to rule out cancer (even though it's unlikely), and you want to find out for sure what's causing the discharge. Good luck - PJH

I had melanoma years ago they caught in time. i had a 3 mm black macule removed near my left areola. I have many of the same health problems my mother had. it came back negative but they never told me what cause this. i have history of lesions and begein tumors. plus other health problems. being perceived as a male for most of my life i finial accept that i am transgender. my doctors treated as a lab rat, freak ,and an object to view. i don't know what to truley do since my health is failing.

Ray, I'm sorry you're not getting the respectful health care you deserve. Since you have a history of skin lesions and benign tumors, I'd guess the spot they removed is part of that history; it doesn't sound at all like a breast cancer symptom, thankfully. If you feel your health is failing, I'd suggest you speak with your local hospital's social workers, and see if they can recommend a physician who might be a better fit for you. You don't want to ignore health issues, though I can understand why you're reluctant to keep seeing a doctor with whom you don't have a good relationship... Best of luck to you - PJH

Hi I had a baby 9 months ago but had very tender breasts before that put it down to being pregnant I never breast feed after a few months if having her I started to get yellow/ greenly discharge from my left nipple and it had a lump behind it I went docs she didn't say mug so I left it. Yestaday I was admitted to hospital for another reason which was very baf top back pain and chest so had a chest X-ray he kept feeling my boob and asking questions he then notices the discharge I told him I'd had it for ages n explained he then said the doctor should have known better and asked me if it bleed I said no he wanted to take swob as he took it he squeezed my nipple a lot of puss followed by bright red blood came out i asked if it was an abscess or mistitus and he said no it isn't he is going to call me Monday to come in and said to see a breast sergon should I be worried ?

Danielle, I can't say don't be concerned about this; but don't stress. Pus followed by red blood sounds very much like an infection, and nothing to do with cancer. (Not sure why your doctor is so sure you don't have an abscess...) Also, a greenish discharge is most often caused by hormones; our post on nipple discharge will give you lots of good information about this. The two (discharge and pus/blood) may or may not be connected; and the lump you feel may be part of a possible infection, or may be something else; read our breast lump FAQS for more info.

So, follow through on your doctor's recommendation to see the breast surgeon; I'm sure s/he'll quickly get to the bottom of this. Good luck - PJH

Good, Danielle. Take deep breaths, and keep busy - try to enjoy your weekend and relax. It's hard, I know, but soon you'll know what's going on, and you'll feel better. PJH
