It is brutal. Don't think it's not. It's ridiculously brutal. I was unable to have reconstructive surgery due to radiation, so now have a mastectomy. it sucks. My chest area is sensitive 12 years later, and I've yet to find a comfortable prosthesis even though I'm using the most current one my Ameno right now. Hey, if you need a mastectomy then that's the way to go. It's not worth dying over. Just know that you're right on......it is brutal and unbelieveably a currently accepted way to deal with breast cancer. Screw life on Mars...let's make life on Earth more humane.
Been there, done that,

Wow, sounds like you had a tough experience - I'm sorry. Yes, cutting off your breast is indeed a brutal action - but the procedure can actually be quite "gentle," or at least as careful/caring as a good surgeon can make it. I think things have progressed, thankfully, in the 12 years since you had your mastectomy. Have you thought of having reconstruction? It's not too late... PJH
Thanks for an excellent overview about mastectomies. I had people tell me before my surgery that their mastectomy didn't hurt. I never believed them, but it would be fair to say that in terms of the scar, what I felt afterwards could be described as more discomfort than actual pain. I'm sensitive to anesthesia, so I spent a day vomiting. After that I couldn't wait to get home. One thing no one prepared me for was the sensitivity in my chest area and down the back of the arm that comes from having nerves cut during the procedure. That has gradually (over a period of years) gone away. My lymphedema therapist was just telling me this week that there are massage techniques that could have helped me get over that sooner.
